Text Box: Text Box: Text Box: Text Box: Frequently Asked Questions…

This is where we will provide answers to common questions we’ve received. Information will be updated as frequently as necessary.
Our goal is to provide information that can support and improve your studio experience, yoga practice, and understanding of our products and services.
There are several types of questions, and we’ve categorized them here. More categories may develop, and we’ll add them as we need to.

Yoga terminology—pose names and related class worries.
Yoga class etiquette—your practice, our teachers, and shared spaces.
Pushing your edge—getting the most from your class.
Shirts, shoes, and supplies—preparation for class and trips.

Yoga Terminology

What if I don’t know the poses—or their names?
Sometimes the best way to learn is by watching, and with repetition, the terms will become meaningful to you. Some instructors will walk around their class and may help you arrange your body. If you are uncertain, please ask for help.

I’ve never done yoga before—can I take this class?
Yoga is as individual as you are, and we would be honored to help you start your yoga path here at the studio. We have classes for all levels, and poses can be adjusted to your experience and flexibility levels. Feel free to call and discuss your concerns with us.

What if I have a physical limitation, injury or condition?
Please let your instructor know before class, so that he or she can help you make the most of your poses and practice without injuring yourself. Yoga can be done by anyone, and we are here to help you learn how to move your body, and listen to what it needs.

Yoga Class Etiquette

How do we arrange the space in here if it’s crowded?
Some classes can be quite crowded. It may be useful to stagger the mats, but a polite “excuse me, may I put my mat here?” is an excellent place to start. Ask the instructor for advice and/or assistance if space is particularly tight.

What if I come in late to or have to leave early from class?
Yoga classes are 90 minutes each unless otherwise indicated on the schedule. Please arrive early or on time to prepare for the class. If you do arrive late or must leave early, please do so quietly: take care to walk softly and keep from disturbing your fellow yogis and yoginis.

What if my cell phone rings during class?
Please turn off your phones. If they must be on, please put them on silent. Loud interruptions disrupt concentration and focus, and are detrimental to everyone’s yogic practice.

Pushing Your Edge

I’m not as good as that human pretzel over there—is that okay?
Yoga is as much an attitude as a physical practice, and you will need to work on your ability to accept yourself and push your own edge without injuring yourself. This edge may change every time you come to class.
Lance Armstrong has a saying: “whatever your 100% looks like, give it.” It takes courage to show up at all. Attend to what your body needs and can do that day. And if it doesn’t look like your neighbor’s body, or you don’t feel up to a deep pose, that’s fine. Be mindful. That’s what yoga is about.

Shirts, Shoes, and Supplies

What should I wear and/or bring to yoga class?
Wear clothing that moves well and is comfortable for your body. Bring a mat if you have one (for traction during poses), and a towel if you like.
We encourage you to drink plenty of water before coming to class, and water is available at the studio if you need it.

What if I don’t have a mat?
You may borrow or buy one from us at the front desk.

Why are people taking off their shoes?
The studio space is a meditative, quiet sanctum. Bare feet honor the silence and humility inherent in such spaces. Please leave your shoes by the door on or near the shoe rack (purses, jackets and other bulky items can be put them in the cubbies at the back of the room.
